Waiting

I saw someplace recently that said a parent is their child’s favorite person for their first ten years. After that, they have best friends, girlfriends, boyfriends, etc.

The point being, don’t waste those first ten years. Cherish them. Make memories for and of a lifetime.

I was no longer their favorite person over the next bit of time.

Through the difficult years.

When I was most definitely not their favorite person.

They were still mine.

They have always been mine.

Then, grandchildren steal your heart like your children simply can’t.

But now you know.

A part of you hopes this time will be different.

It’s not.

They grow. Make friendships. First loves.

And for a second time, you are no longer the favorite.

It stings every bit as much, if not a little more, the second time around.

But now you know that eventually that that love comes out the other side.

Along with their realization that they are still your favorite.

So, you wait. Wait with an open heart for your favorite person to come home knowing that you’ve been there loving them all along.
