A day like any other

September 11.

A day on the calendar like any other.

On September 10, 2001 the next day was my grandparent’s wedding anniversary, nothing else.

Until the next morning.

Four planes.

Two towers.

The Pentagon.

A field in Pennsylvania.

Lives lost.

The rest of us changed forever.

I was out today and I heard someone say ‘Oh yeah, it’s Sept 11.  These pictures, they make me sad.’

I read something a friend wrote that she wished that we were as good at celebrating good as we are at commemorating our tragedies.

They both have a point.  And while I understand the sentiment, when I watch the remembrances or see the pictures, what stands out to me are the ‘heroes’.

Those who stood up to the wrong.

Those who ran into the danger to help.

I didn’t fly today. And in some ways, today has been just like any other day.

Except it’s not.

My job doesn’t let me forget that day, or the men and women who stood up to the wrong.

May we never forget them.

Today…and every day that is like any other.
